The shield has a big downside though. You run the risk of not actually learning the fights. You'll try other weapons and come to the conclusion that they are bad. Witryna'Holding' infantry means infantry with high melee defence, for Empire this means spearmen with shields, halberds have good stats too but they die relatively fast to missile fire. It was already mentioned around here several times but Empire lacks good late game infantry, I guess it is part of the faction's design.
