WebJun 13, 2002 · What I have found is the 65 auto and standard starter will not work. They are 9 tooth gears. I checked an 85 mustang starter and it has 9 teeth as well. I have read in the mustang catalog that there is a 157 tooth flywheel but I can not find a 10 tooth starter to match it. I am going to go look at a 79 302 starter in hopes it will work.
